Fancy Kathryn

I'm just an ordinary lady.  I like being the ordinary go with the flow type.  I love being a stay at home mom - it is my choice and I wouldn't change that.  I usually wear jeans and a t-shirt (or maybe it's pajama pants and a t-shirt).  My wardrobe is 90% hand me downs and over 3 years old.  I don't leave my family and go on fancy retreats.  I kind of live in a little bubble with my husband, kids, and family and refuse to come out.

But, sometimes I spend 5 minutes doing my make-up instead of 2.  Sometimes I put on my fancy outfit, give myself a little spritz of perfume, wear my one fancy bracelet, and do things that really are different than my normal routine.

Tonight I got to go with Marily to a fundraiser for the Diving Lady.  I spoke for about 2 minutes in front of about 75+ people (I'm bad at estimating crowds), who happened to be people like city council members, an editor of a magazine, the president of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, the men who have been working to restore the diving lady, business men and women...and I didn't throw-up, I held my own.  I mingled, I chatted.  I was totally hobnobbing it with people who make money by day instead of changing at least 10 diapers a day.

I like being ordinary me, wouldn't change my situation, but sometimes it is a little exhilarating to do something out of the ordinary, even for just 3 1/2 hours.

Thank goodness for nice business people in Mesa, who make it easy to hobnob with.  Thank goodness for Marily, cause I always need a partner in crime.  Thank goodness that Ryan is a stellar dad who even though he has lots of work (hallelujah!!!!), he worked late on Monday and went in early today so he could come home from work tonight to let me go mingle.  And thank goodness that I have girls who act like I am so beautiful when I get dressed up.  (Ryan wasn't quite sure about my belt thing, "Is that the trendy thing now?" he asked.  Lucy and Elsa thought my belt was quite nice, "Dad, stop.  Mom, don't listen to him.")

I see people do these outfit run downs on their blog and I never do them cause I'm never dressed up.  I've thought of doing one with one of my usual "work" outfits, just to be sarcastic.  But since I actually got dressed up, here is the low down:

- shirt:  Forever 21.  I got some birthday money from my mom and since nearly all my shirts have holes in them, I decided I better actually go shopping for myself.  I keep hearing things about Forever 21 so I thought I would check them out.  Thanks mom.
- cardigan:  Angela.  Angela can count that she has clothed the naked because I love all her hand-me-downs.
- pants:  from the years of when I actually needed "business casual."  Thanks goodness my kids keep me active.
- belt:  a buck at the thrift store
- bracelet:  my string of pearls that Ryan bought for his Pearl when we were rich.  (Past tense.  Before we had money and blessings.  Now we just have lots and lots of blessings.)
- shoes:  thrift store

Now, back to reality, hair up in a ponytail, cause my house looks like it exploded and we have scouts at our house tomorrow night.

Oh, and P.S. - this morning, Lucy and Elsa's carpool came to pick them up for school.  I looked like a mess cause I didn't sleep very good.  And as we stood by the front door so I could open it, with 2 five year olds in flip flops (I was too tired to put on their tennis shoes) and 2 two year olds and myself in bare feet, a scorpion started to run around right by our feet.  How we didn't step on him, I don't know.  I screamed for everyone to get back, grabbed Annie and Leta and jerked them out of harms way.  Then Lucy and Elsa jumped over the scorpion to get outside to go to school, I got my fly swatter and killed the little devil and Leta and Annie clapped for me.  We were a sight, but at least we were a safe sight.

Fancy is fun! Yeah, there's never a need for me to do an outfit run down either... considering I usually only get compliments when I'm wearing a hand-me-down from Angela. Although someone did like me jeans I bought at Old Navy for 50 cents 10 years ago. :)

PS We were 20 minutes late to preschool this morning because we didn't wake up until 8:53am and it starts at 9:00am, so if I compare your morning to mine, you were way more on top of things than me.

The other day I put on a nice white shirt with nice khaki shorts and Emily asked me where I was going. I told her I wasn't going anywhere then she asked me why was I all dressed up. Sometimes it just feels nice to do it.
